By golly, make him jolly,

a hint of pink,

will tint that fink in rose-colored folly.

Too bad my aim wasn’t as true as my intention.

The spell shot out of my wand in a flash of pink and hit Officer Hoss directly in his mirrored sunglasses, where it rebounded back at me. The jolt of exhilarating energy surge through me with a buzz. I bent over double as I absorbed it.

“Stop pointing that thing at me!” Officer Hoss flinched and brought up his hand to shield his eyes from the light. “What was that? A mirror?”

“No, it’s uh…” I tucked my knitting needed back in my bun. “Just a hair thingy.”

He let out a deep sigh. “I said, explain yourself!”

There was no time for that. The hilarity of the spell sank into me. “Aw, Mr. Officer, What’s wrong?” I poked Officer Hoss’s nose. “Why the long face?”

I bent over in laughter. This struck me as especially funny because underneath his disguise, I suspected he was really a centaur.

“Savvy, what are you doing? Answer the man.” Shotgun shot a nervous glance at his partner.

Officer Hoss took turns glowering at us. “First, this one keeps bumping into me all morning – claims he can’t see me.” He harrumphed and hooked a thumb at Shotgun. “Now you fall off the ski lift and can’t stop giggling? This is starting to feel like a prank.”

Shotgun pulled off his rose-colored glasses and I snatched them from him. Obviously the spell I’d put on them was affecting the way that he saw Officer Hoss because he was part of the magical community. “Savvy! What are you doing? Give those back!”

I didn’t. I put them on and batted his hands away. I knew that a flight was brewing between us, but I didn’t care. I felt like egging it on, but I couldn’t hold myself together to voice my irritation. Picturing how ridiculous I looked in the silly glasses triggered another peel of laughter from me. I couldn’t help it. The guffaws rose up and needed a way out.

Officer Hoss crossed his arms. “What is this? Some kind of joke?”

“No, no, sir!” Shotgun stepped in front of me. “To be honest, I’m not sure what’s gotten into her.” He shot me a worried look. It only made me laugh until tears leaked out of my eyes. It didn’t help that he looked like a talking statue through Shotgun’s glasses.

“So, let me get this straight,” Officer Hoss scratched his wig. “You almost fell to your death and you think it’s hilarious?”

“Yeah. No.” I sucked in a breath, trying to gain control over myself. “I’m in shock.”

Tears trickled down my cheeks. I ignored them and pulled my posture up straight.

Officer Hoss’ mustache twitched. He poked a finger at me. “It seems to me that you’re more obnoxious than usual. Are you under the influence of something?”

Shotgun put his hands up. “Like drinking? No way. We were together all morning. The only thing she’s had to drink is coffee, though maybe, too much of it.
